5 Things to do locally for Christmas

1. Balboa Park Dec 4 5 to 10 pm and Dec 5 noon to 10 pm. Christmas on the Prado.Lights, crafts, singing, it's all there for free. And so is most of San Diego. But it is guaranteed to get you in the holiday spirit!
2. Ocean Beach Annual Holiday Parade December 5 starts about 5 pm on Newport Avenue. Froms Harleys to garage bands come join in the funky fun!
3. Coronado Head for the hotel Del. They have their own ice skating rink, and over 100,000 lights decorating the hotel. Inside the hotel is a fabulous decorated tree. Great place for family pictures!
4. San Diego Bay Parade of lights Dec 13 and Dec 20 Fireworks show at 5:30 and parade starts soon after. Bring hot cocoa and blankets and enjoy the free sight. Begins near Shelter Island.
5. And don't forget the beach! Just once during the holiday take a walk along the beach. Then when you brag about living in San Diego it will be authentic. Another great family photo spot.

I notice pointsettias are out in force already. I've seen them at Costco, the giant stand on the ground ones, Home Depot 6 in and 4 in pot size. Hot spiced cider

My favorite recipe for hot spiced apple cider is one of those throw-it-
together-as-you-go recipes, but I'll try to explain the process as
best I can. First, I take a large jug of apple juice (a gallon if we're
entertaining). Then I pour the juice into a large pot on the stove (or
into the slow cooker if I don't want to use a burner). Heat to a simmer.

Then add the following ingredients to the pot:

--about one cup of frozen orange juice concentrate (this ingredient
is a MUST)
--approximately two teaspoons (more or less) of EACH of the
following: Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Ginger, Cloves (whole or ground)
--and sometimes I add about one cup (or less) of cranberry juice
cocktail

Let it all simmer for awhile (half an hour at least). The smell wafting
through the house while the cider is simmering is simply heaven.
Mmmmm ... Serve the hot spiced cider in mugs. For a nice touch,
add a whole cinnamon stick to each mug.

Re: Homemade alternative to baby wipes
I’d like to share a recipe for homemade diaper wipes. If you’re using throw
away ones, you’re throwing away cash! For homemade wipes, if you really
insist on disposable ones, cut a roll of Good quality paper towels in half,
each half will fill one purchased wipes tub. I prefer to use rags, like old wash
cloths, or cut squares of flannellette (old receiving blankets, or flat diapers
are great!).
--Boil and cool a cup or so of water.
--Once cooled, at least to tepid, mix in a couple ounces of baby oil (preferably
a natural one, without petroleum ingredients), and about the same amount
of baby shampoo or body wash.
--Pour over your “wipe” of choice
Wipes made with rags, will keep longer, and not get smelly if you use more
oil and shampoo. (You could add lotion too if you wanted!)

Hey! I added a new gadget at the bottom of my blog! It's holiday tip of the day. They will allcome from a great site called organizedchristmas.com. Check it out to find fun things to do with the kids for Halloween, Thanksgiving or Christmas!

Here is the Pumpkin Eater Doughnuts Recipe I promised you. Br sure you don't tell the kids these doughtnuts have healthy stuff in them!

Pumpkin Eater Doughnuts

2T. shortening 3/4 c. sugar
2 eggs 1 c. pumpkin
1 c. shredded Bran Cereal 2 3/4 c. flour
2t. baking powder 1 t. pumpkin pie spice
1/2 t. salt oil for frying
cinnamon/sugar mixture to roll doughnuts in

Beat shortening and sugar till fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time. Stir in pumpkin, then cereal. Let mixture stand for 2 minutes so cereal will soften. Sift dry ingedients together. Stir into pumpkin mixture. Cover and chill for 1 hour or until dough is stiff enough to handle. Roll 1/2 inch thick on lightly floured board. Cut using cookie cutter or a glass. Fry in heated oil till golgen brown. Drain on paper towels. Roll in cinnamon/sugar mixture till coated. Makes 2 dozen.

Whole-WHeat Pita BREAD
2 tsp. yeast 2 1/2 C. whole-wheat flour
1 C. warm water 1 tsp. salt
Dissolve yeast in warm water. Add flour and salt, and stir to make a soft
dough. Knead well, adding a little flour if needed. Place in greased bowl.
Cover and let rise 15 minutes. Divide dough into 8 balls. Cover and let rise
10 minutes. Flatten each ball and use rolling pin to roll into a thin circle
(about 1/4-inch thick). Place on greased baking sheet. Bake at 500 for 4
to 6 minutes until puffed and lightly browned.
These pitas are perfect for chicken or turkey salad sandwiches. (See recipe
in Preserving Meats section.)
Quick Fried Bread
2 C. wheat or white flour
4 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1/2 to 3/4 C. water
Mix dry ingredients. Slowly stir in water until a nice dough forms. Pull off
golf ball–size pieces and stretch into 5- to 6-inch circles. Fry bread in hot
oil, turning to cook both sides. Place on paper towel to drain excess oil. Use
for Navajo Tacos or as a treat with jam or honey spread on top.

Here are a few recipes from a new book available at Deseret Book. It's called Cooking with Food Storage made Easy by Debbie G. Harman. It covers what to store, how to use dry foods, how to store meats, legumes, and more! Also how to sprout and 72 hour kits.

Chicken Pot pies
Follow recipe for Beef Pot Pies, replace the beef chunks with 1 qt. chicken
chunks. Continue as directed.
Beef Pot Pies
1 qt. beef chunks 1 C. frozen peas and carrots
1/4 C. diced dried onions 1/4 C. flour
1 C. diced dried potatoes Pie crust dough for 2 pies
Combine first four ingredients with 2 C. water in a large saucepan. Simmer,
uncovered, until potatoes are tender. Meanwhile, make pie crust according
to directions. (See pie crust recipe in Snacks and Treats section.)
Roll out dough and cut into 6-inch squares. Using a slotted spoon, place
about 1/3 C. beef filling in center of each square. Fold one corner across
to opposite corner to make a triangle. Pinch edges to seal. Carefully place
pot pies on greased baking sheet. Bake at 375 for 25-30 minutes or until
crust is golden brown.
Turkey Pot pies
Follow recipe for Beef Pot Pies, but replace beef chunks with 1 qt. turkey
chunks. Continue as directed.

I got this from a friend of mine when I lived in Laguna Hills, CA.

1 lb. beef (top sirloin is best) cut into strips or bite size pieces
1/2 c. soy sauce
$T. sugar
1/4 c. water
2 T. onion shredded or flakes
2 buds garlic smashed
1/2 t. pepper
1 T Accent optional if allergic to MSG
Mix well and pour over meat. Marinate for 1 to 2 hours or overnight in a zip lock bag if you are that organized!

Holidays Crafts

The kids are back in school and a new school year has begun. Where did the summer go?? Up in smoke, I am afraid! We all need to pray for cooler weather so the fires won't get worse. But look on the bright side and start thinking of all the fun things you can do with your kids to prepare for the upcoming holidays!

One thing my kids had fun doing when they were young was painting tin cans to look like pumpkins or ghosts. This is a cheap and cheerful craft activity. All you need to do is save all the cans you want to use from the meals you prepare. Tuna cans are good and so are soup cans or fruit cans. Wash them out well and take off any labels. Then pull out the acrylic paints used for tole painting, in white, black, orange and green. These can be bought at Wal Mart or Michaels for about .99 each. Paint the cans a solid white if you are making ghosts or orange if you are making pumpkins. Then use your imagination to paint jack o lantern faces and ghost faces. Black is good for drawing faces or yellow to make it look like its glowing. A little green for a stem.

As a final touch punch 2 holes in the top of the cans and attach a pipe cleaner for a handle. They are really cute and you can use them to give goodies to neighbors, as a candy dish in your house, or just as a decoration. You can even use it as a candle holder. Make sure the pipe cleaner is out of the way so you don't start a fire!

O.K. I didn't see a lot of great deals this week except for the blueberries at Vons and the raspberries at Henrys. I wish I could say just don't go shopping this week. So my advice to you is look for the clearanced items or discontinued items on the shelf. Also look for the eggs and meat items that are almost to their pull date . These will often be marked down for quick sale. You can often find marked down for quick sale in the deli department on lunchmeats and cheeses. And don't forget your coupons!

They do this to get you into the store and they hope you will buy other things that are not on sale. Lost leaders this week may be for school supplies, groceries for school lunches and college supplies. Also look in the clearance isiles or shevles in the grocery stores. Just a little note on my shopping trip last week. I usually shop at Ralphs because they give me $1.00 for every $50.00 I spent. They also keep track of what I buy and every other month they send me coupons on things I regularly buy. They track this on my Ralphs card. I also go to Ralphs.com and add coupons directly to my Ralphs card and get that discount when ever I buy that item. I also get an Entertainment Book and they have a $5.00 off coupon for every month I use and in the free coupon magazine everyone gets is another $5.00 off coupon for Ralphs I use and my daughter gives me hers because she doesn't shop at Ralphs. SO almost every time I go to Ralphs I have $5.00 free groceries!

But last week I went to the 4S Ralphs store and had a field day with discounts. If you look carefully the store always marks down foods close to expiration date. I bought Egglands Best Eggs with a coupon for .50 off and the store had discounted them to 1.99 from 4.39 and the expiration date was in October! Ralphs always has meat discounted. You just have to look in the meat case for it. I had a coupon for 2.00 off any angus beef purchase so I bought a rib eye steak for 4.12, discounted from 7.00. So I paid 2.00 for a steak big enough for Bill and I both to have for dinner. I aslo looked in the fresh berry case and found red raspberries for .50 a pkg. Yes they were a little old, but I was going to make jam out of them. So they were perfect for jam making!

So in this tight economy look around your store for the deals. Grocers want to sell everything because they are hurting too. They would rather get less for older but still safe to eat food than just throw it away.

Stop using plastic wrap!

You probably already know this but here it is anyway. Plastic wrap is made from petroleum products (read: expensive and non renewable). Aluminum foil is not made from petroleum and it is also recyclable! I was just reading that Americans throw enough aluminum foil away every 3 months to rebuild our entire commercial air fleet! That's a lot of aluminum!

So by using aluminum foil and recycling it, you are doing 2 good things for our planet and saving a little cash too!

Check out Stater Bros. own line of products under the Valu Time label. These are always cheaper than the name brand and often just as good. Except in my experience get the name brand for Mayonaise, peanut butter (unless used in cooking ), and bleach.

I have noticed that I have been putting less in my emails about good prices. This is because prices are going up! So if there is any way you can plant a garden do it! Even if it is only a tomato plant or some herbs. You will be blessed for any gardening you try!

Souplantation's Chocolate Brownie Muffins

CHOCOLATE BROWNIE MUFFINS

2 c. all purpose flour
1/2 wheat flour
3/4 c. unsweetened cocoa
2T. baking powder
3/4 t. salt
1 heaping c. milk chocolate chips
1 2/3 c buttermilk
1 1/4 c. granulated sugar
3/4 c. plus 1T canola oil
3 large eggs

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray muffin pans with cooking spray.

In a bowl, mix flours, cocoa, baking pdr., salt and chocolate chips. Mix till thoroughly combined.

Combine buttermilk, sugar, oil and eggs in a large bowl. Mix well.

Add dry ingredients to wet and combine thoroughly, but do not over mix.

Using a 2 oz. scoop, scoop muffin mixture into muffin pans. Bake for 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Makes about 2 dozen muffins.

Summer Fun at Palomar Observatory

In all the time I have lived here I have never gone to the Palomar Observatory. I bet some of you out there haven't either. Well if you are worried about how to keep your kids minds from going to sleep this summer a trip to the Observatory is the thing to do! It's less than a 2 hour drive. And look for the fresh fruit stands to pick up some produce on the way home. They have guided tours on Saturday and Sunday at 11:30, 1:30 and 2:30. Tickets for the tour are $5.00 and sold at the gift shop.The tour is NOT recommended for children under 6. And your cell phone won't work past 5,000 feet.

Music Mania is the 2009 San Diego County Fair Theme. The fair opens June 12 to July 5. Here is a fun way to enjoy the fair with your family. Enter a One Day Contest! These don't require advance registration and many offer free fair admission on the day of the contest to contestants. Summer is almost here. So now is the time to plan to take advantage of all those precious days. Here are a list of 21 things to help you enjoy the summer to the fullest!
1. Take a hike.
2. Read a biography.
3. Make real lemonade.
4. Have a Block Party. A great way to get to know your neighbors better and introduce them to the gospel!
5. Go on a fieldtrip. Pretend you're in school and go to a place you would go on a school fieldtrip. A museum, aquarium, farm, factory. The yellow pages is a great place to find places to visit. Just look under museum or factory for a start.
6. Sleep outside. August is great for this since you can see so many falling stars. Going to the desert or up to Ramona is better to get away from the city lights where you can see more stars.
7. Go to a drive in movie.
8. have a yard sale.
9. Swim!
10. Eat homemade ice cream at sunset.
11.Attend a concert in the park. See earlier post on this very subject!
12. Go horseback riding.
13. Visit an amusement park. Look for discounts at grocery stores or see if AAA card gets yu in cheaper.
14.Attend a festival. Like apples in Julian, garlic in Gilroy, etc. Google festivals in Ca.
15. Shop at a Farmers Market.
16. Pick fresh fruit. Then make jam or ice cream or fruit leather with it!
17. Clean up a park or some other service project.
18. build a fort.
19. Go to the County Fair. Remember those $2.00 tickets! for June 14.
20. Stargaze.
21. Compete in a race, walk a thon or trialtalon.
